Panasonic will become the main battery supplier for Lucid electric vehicles.
Panasonic Energy Co. and Lucid Group announced that they have “entered into multi-year EV battery supply agreements for Lucid’s entire vehicle lineup.
” According to the press release, Panasonic will supply lithium ion EV batteries not only for the Lucid Air Mod. , but also an interesting move for the upcoming Lucid Gravity SUV.
Lucid had a partnership with LG Chem (LG Energy Solutions) first announced in 2020. By 2023 the company will be the exclusive lithium-ion cell supplier of LucidAir’s “Standard Edition”. A few years ago (2016),Lucid Samsung was developing batteries using SDI.
We don’t know the details, but it looks like Panasonic will become the main battery supplier for Lucid electric vehicles.
Until now, the Lucid has relied on 2170-type cylindrical battery cells (the same form factor used by Tesla – in some of its models – Rivian brands).
We think Panasonic will also offer 2170-type cells. Initially, the cells are supplied from Japan, where the Japanese manufacturer has 2170 types of battery production lines.
In the future, Panasonic will supply Lucid with locally manufactured batteries in the US at a new factory (currently under construction) in De Soto, Kansas.
However, the Kansas plant is expected to begin production in fiscal year 2024 (April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025).
The factory will initially focus on 2170-type batteries, but there is an idea to add 4680-type at some point in the future.
Panasonic also manufactures 2170-type battery cells in Nevada, but that’s a different story because it’s a direct partnership.
With Tesla at the Tesla Gigafactory 1, as far as we know, only for Tesla’s needs (which are huge). According to Peter Rawlinson, Lucid’s CEO and CTO, “Panasonic is an excellent partner with advanced technology and experience.
