MCL vs. Bears: Kyle Pitts believed to have torn MCL

Despite early indications that Kyle Pitts had avoided a major injury, an MRI indicated the star tight end tore his MCL, according to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport.

MCL vs. Bears: Kyle Pitts believed to have torn MCL

Pitts went up the middle in the third quarter Sunday and made the catch before taking a low helmet hit.  His knee/thigh area.

He entered the field with a small but noticeable limp and the questionable decision was made to allow him to return.

According to Ian Rapoport, Pitts will get the second vote.  If confirmed, he will undergo surgery, possibly ending the 2022 season.

The good news, if anything, is that Pitts avoided a more troublesome ACL tear.  Generally, MCL tears heal faster and better than ACL tears.

While it’s early, Pitts can still participate in some offseason activities before the 2023 season and remain optimistic that he’ll be fully healthy next season.

Pitts enjoyed a quiet sophomore year behind Atlanta’s conservative passing anchor.  Although he had 356 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns in 10 games on the receiving end of scattered accuracy from Marcus Mariota, the two’s relationship seemed shaky all season.

Losing Pitts would still be a big blow, a threat to be reckoned with, a player who dominated snaps and a tight end who was asked to block a lot this year and is improving. Without his big-play ability, the passing game is likely to be more limited.

With Pitts likely out, Mykol Pruitt will remain the team’s top pass rusher unless the Falcons are willing to let go of former fellow Titan Anthony Furxer.

Pruitt has one touchdown and 31 yards on the season, and he, Parker Hesse and Philippe Franks will likely get more work in the passing game.
